Macworld cometh

It's that time of year again. Just after we get everything unwrapped from Christmas and the decoration stashed back in the attic when Jobs kicked off Macworld with several more rea$on$ to get out the wallet.

The last two years I've been granted "media access" to the Keynote and am hoping this will be my third. It's only because of you listeners and fans that I've gotten that special access. I plan to bring you some interesting content from the Keynote, the Expo floor where I'll be talking with developers, and more from all the events (parties) going on during Macworld.

Also, stay tuned for some changes coming to CocoaRadio with possible new hosts, and of course new interviews! Please drop me your ideas and requests via the new CocoaRadio Page on Facebook or AIM: cocoaradio.

Without the generous support of our sponsors, iPhoneDevCamp would not have been the success it was. Over 350 people spent their weekend hacking on iPhone to create 45 apps.

This was a model DevCamp, so in the Barcamp spirit, start something local! Check out the iPhoneDevCamp wiki for details. Where next NYC? Austin? Chicago?

Update: the next iPhoneDevCamp will be in Dallas, Texas. Check out the wiki for details and throw in where you can to make it rock. If you have questions, space available or wish to sponsor, ping me AIM/Gtalk/Skype:cocoaradio

iPhoneDevCamp Interviews

It's been a great couple of days in San Francisco where over 300 developers have gatherered to learn about iPhone and to hack on apps. The hackathon demos are coming to a close after almost three hours. I've done a quick edit of interviews recorded here to get them posted ASAP.

None of the apps accessible via iPhone use Cocoa, of course, but they will be of interest to you if you're looking to extend your app functionality to iPhone. Check out the apps wiki page for details. Several are posted as open source for you to explore.

These news shows have been edited using Rogue Amoeba's Fission (thanks Paul!) and are hosted on the excellent Bingo disk service from Joyent. Hopefully these improvements to my workflow will pave the road to easier post-production and more regular publication of shows - please hold your applause! ;)

Raise Your iPhones!

Raise Your iPhones!
Originally uploaded by tow_adam.

From iPhoneDevCamp tonight in San Francisco. A few Newtons made it into the picture.

iPhoneDevCamp @ Adobe in San Francisco

n2369999910_608.jpg
While WWDC didn't deliver exactly what many Cocoa developers wanted to hear in regards to iPhone, this will still be an incredible opportunity for Mac devs. I envision a whole new class of users who will be wowed by Apple's ease-of-use and design aethetic. These soon to be converted users will be looking for apps and experiences better than their current Treo, RIM, or ahem, Razr offers!

Many Mac developers will be able to extend functionality of current apps to iPhone while others will dream up the next must-have apps. It will be exciting to see what comes out of this DevCamp.

Be sure to check out the iPhoneDevCamp wiki and help spread the word among your Coccoa & web developer buddies as well as designers. RSVP on either Facebook or Upcoming or set up a local mirror event wherever you live.

The iPhone launch is going to hit hard next week and the media attention, I'm afraid, may be overwhelming for even the most ardent Apple supporters. The iPhoneDevCamp should be a breath of fresh air and we're gunning to make it a rockin' event for all who can attend.

Calling all sponsors: If you're interesting in sponsoring, take a look at the open needs (meal sponsors would be great) on the wiki and contact me (cocoaradio[at]mac dot com) to discuss. Money or in-kind donations for prizes is fine -we only ask that your prizes be related to iPhone. There will be loads of prizes throughout the event.

iPhone Developers Camp is an upcoming gathering, inspired by BarCamp, SuperHappyDevHouse, and MacHack, to develop web-based applications and optimize web sites for iPhone. It is a non-commercial event, organized by volunteers, with attendance free to all. By the completion of the weekend event, a number of iPhone-ready web applications and web sites will be launched to the public. The event will be held at the San Francisco offices of Adobe, and out-of-town guests are welcome.

Attendees will include web designers, developers, testers, and iPhone owners, all working together over the weekend to improve the web experience for iPhone. Development projects will include both solo and team efforts. While some attendees will wish to work solo during the event, we encourage attendees to team up, based on expertise, to work in ad-hoc project development teams. All attendees should be prepared to work on a development project during the event. You do not need to own an iPhone to attend (although, a large number of iPhones at the event will make the development and testing process much easier).

Attendees will be able to:
* Create new web applications for iPhone.
* Optimize existing web applications for iPhone.
* Migrate Dashboard Widgets to web-based widgets for iPhone.
* Test and optimize web sites for iPhone.

The event is being held the week following the public release of iPhone, to allow prospective attendees some time to acquire an iPhone. This also allows early-acquirers the opportunity to do some experimentation before attending the event.

CocoaRadio @ MWSF07: Scott Stevenson

Cocoablogs-Magazine

Scott Stevenson stopped by Obvious Corp. during the MashPit + CocoaDevHouse and agreed to record a podcast for you all.

Scott writes about Cocoa on his popular blog, Theocacao (pronounce it as you wish!) He also coaches Cocoa devs, maintains Cocoa Dev Central and recently launched a developer news site, Cocoa Blogs. I just have to wonder if Scott is privately funded by Apple to spread the love of Mac!

I also consider Scott lucky to be doing all these things from Silicon Valley.

CocoaRadio @ MWSF07: Tyler Ballance, Bleep Software

Tyler arrived at Macworld surprisingly in one piece after a non-stop journey cross-country - the things people will do for their favorite computer Mac+music+TV+phone company!

He's a quick study in Obj-C and Cocoa, responsible for keeping the conversation rolling on #CocoaDevHouse, and attended the first event in Dallas.

As a Barcamper, Tyler gained notoriety for his hack to share contact details. He calls it BonSoir which got picked up by O'Reilley bloggers and TUAW among others. It was released it under a "Taco License"!

"Bonsoir takes advantage of Cocoa Distributed Objects, Bonjour, and the Address Book API for allowing the quick and easy sharing of vCards on a local network. The basic idea was that everybody could grab Bonsoir here at BarCampTexas, select their vCards, and we could all add each other (into Address Book) to help keep in touch"

With his forthcoming Emission app, we'll see further proof that he's got something between those ears.

Apple iPhone dashboard

Originally uploaded by niallkennedy.
I thought I got some great pics at Macworld but this is much better. Gotta post this here (it's already burned in my brain) as a reminder of the opportunties iPhone will surely open to Cocoa devs.

While people are making a stink about it be closed, I predicted during WWDC that Dashcode would be promoted for creating mobile widgets. I expect in the coming 5 months we'll hear lots about how to extend desktop apps to iPhone.

New shows

I know what you're thinking! When your CocoaRadio feed lights up with new posts, there's supposed to be new shows. Well, rest assured they are coming. I've recorded 3 new ones this week and will get them posted ASAP.

Since several of you have emailed to see if I'm alive, I thought I'd post a quick update.

[UPDATE: those 3 shows are NOT coming thanks to a corrupt drive. Sorry for the false hope]

Great time to get started with Xcode

Picture 6
For all of you Xcoders and Cocoa dev newbies (incl. yours truly), check out the free PDF starter "Become an Xcoder" by Alex Clark of CocoaLab in Australia.

I've meant to blog about this since Alex announced the availability in Chinese and Arabic. [links removed see link above] Take that O'Reilly!  Maybe Alex knows something about the growth of the international Mac market that others have missed.

Grab the PDF and get cracking!  Also, CocoaLab hosts an online Wiki version of the text in English.

Kudos to CocoaLab for making tools like this available to new developers. It would be cool to see developers offer to run people through this course at CocoaDevHouse. There are a few in planning around Australia last I heard.

WWDC 06 experience

I have just concluded my first WWDC pilgrimage. Following a January Macworld, I was very excited to in San Francisco for the big event. The excitement for advancements coming in Leopard are far beyond what I recall for Tiger. It seems as if Apple has put many pieces in place with Cocoa, Obj-C, Xcode, and the multitude of enhancements to core apps. It really does keep getting better and better. I have a feeling the recent Ubuntu converts will be renouncing their new love in the spring of 2007.

I made a statement in January that I would be learning Cocoa this year and it's not come to pass. However, I am newly inspired to pick up the thick books and with the help of cocoa dev friends I hope to be coding for Leopard in the coming months. Now if I can just figure out what in Kochrans book I should ignore. Perhaps some personal coaching from Aaron Hillegaas when in Atlanta next is in order.

Omni Group's Greg Titus on CocoaRadio

OmniplanIt's longtime favorite Mac company Omni Group on CocoaRadio! Tune in to loads from Omni's first employee, Greg Titus, developer on Omni Outliner, Graffle, and for the last year, his pet project: Omni Plan. From the looks of the icon, we're in for a treat - releasing tonight!

OdintroOmni, a stalwart among Mac dev shops, dates back to 1993 now has about 25 employees in Seattle. In the last month, we've started seeing fruits of their decision a year ago to broaden their product line with Omni Dazzle.

In the interview, Ethan of the infamous, Kinkless GTD, is mentioned several times but I regretfully and embarrassingly didn't recall his name. So as penance, I'm double plugging KGTD here: it's great, life changing, must have! Get KGTD and OmniOutliner Pro (no, I only wish that was an affiliate link.)

Click below for Greg Titus on CocoaRadio and point your browsers to Omni Plan on Wed., 26 July.

Also mentioned during our interview when talking about the Omni Plan icon was Todos (not "todo" as I mis-stated) from Digg Update developer and fellow Texan, Dustin Bachrach. Simple and fun nothing more. Dustin is now on the hook to participate in the next Austin or Dallas CocoaDevHouse.

Scott Thompson, lead MindManager developer on CocoaRadio

Mindjet For Mac

If you are a mind-mapping addict or business switcher, you're going to enjoy this interview with Scott. He is a former developer on Macromedia FreeHand with a great story to share about a company doing things right on the Mac. Mindjet didn't just port their Windows app (thank you!) as Scott explains, but intentionally set out to create a solid Cocoa app and true Mac experience. Simple logic other software companies should adopt!

Now that it's out I expect to see it become even more powerful via Applescript and their API - a wake up call for all of you power users and GTD hacks out there! So grab a demo and tune in.

Knowing that many non-iTunes PC users don't care for AAC files, I've encoded this show as mp3. I'm just too busy or lazy to add pictures in Garageband too.

Amsterdam to host first CocoaDevHouse in Europe

As you may have heard, CocoaDevHouse is an un-conference for the people by the people that is now scheduled to start on April 21st in Amsterdam. RSVP on Upcoming. For those in Europe, see what's happening and get involved. It's sure to be a great time. Some details from the wiki:

The event will be cohosted by our two generous venue donors: Mediamatic and Fleck.com
The CocoaDevHouse hackathon event will take place in the fabulous "Le Mepris" and exhibition designed to resemble an airport lounge. Willem Welthoven of Mediamatic has also very kindly offered us the use of a reinstated Food Facility and GarageBox Bar for the duration of the event. So that's a hackathon, in an airport lounge, in an art exhibition!

Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten of Fleck.com has kindly offered us of his space so if people are up for breakout sessions / informal stuff that's not hacking, (I know a few are) then we can use Fleck's office.

Picture 1-2In true wiki spirit, CocoaDevHouse planning has spread to Australia, Europe, and to various cities around the States. Don't ask when CocoaDevHouse is coming to a city near you, but how many OS X enthusiasts you know nearby. Then simply add your city to the wiki, blog about it and ask others to spread the word. We will soon have a "Spread CocoaDevHouse" page on the wiki (who's going to beat me to creating that? Spread Barcamp is an honorable example).

Don McAllister, host of the new EuroMacPodcast has reported on the event in his inaugural podcast. Check it out and support his efforts to cover Mac news from a European perspective. Props to Don for helping to spread  CocoaDevHouse in Europe.

Mindjet coming to the Mac. Join the beta

Mindjet Logo
If you feel the need to quickly organize ideas or brainstorm with others, you might find peace in using a mind mapping tool. I've looked at NovaMind in the past but it wasn't until I sat down for lunch with a buddy, Matt Hollingsworth, on his TabletPC (sheeks of horror ensue) that I saw the power of these tools.

Often I'll jot ideas on 3x5 note cards and return to them with an outliner tool such as Omni's or maybe VoodooPad but often crave paper instead. What I usually end up with is sort of like the "maps" that mind mapping software can create. The bonus to not having it "stuck" on paper is, of course, that I can more easily share it; add tasks; or continue with an expandable canvas.

I only know Mindjet from Matt's demo and his use of it at the recent CocoaDevHouse. If Omni Graffle is one of the must-have Mac apps, I have a feeling that Windows users feel that same about Mindjet and for that matter may not consider a switch to OS X thinkable. Thanks to Mindjet for realizing the potential of Mac professional market.

Join their beta here (opens March 29th). It sounds like they need more beta participants and I know you guys are just the right folks to make sure they do things right.

There has been chatter in #cocoadevhouse about app ideas to kick off the event. The theme has been open open open. If things go well, maybe you devs in other cities would like join projects started in Dallas.

Pimpin my GETV interview

Ekai-Blakeburrisofcocoaradiodevelopssomenakedsecrets588That's Geek Entertainment TV for the uninitiated - a video podcast covering Bubble 2.0 and associated people in the Bay Area. I was only of interest during Macworld. As part of my San Francisco excursion to Macworld, Irina Slutsky and Eddie Codel pressed me to divulge some off-the-mark rumors about the upcoming Stevenote. The actual product news was much better for us all thankfully.

Developers often tell me that they can't listen to their CocoaRadio interviews once posted and I can now feel their pain. If CocoaRadio goes video, this is a personal reminder that I'm going to need some coaching.

...which reminds me, there is a little something I'm planning for you guys but am still searching for a co-host to pull it off; someone with the presence of say Kevin Rose or Peter Rojas for a new show. Instead of just me talking with one developer or dev team, we'll cover more ground. If you're interested in knowing more or know someone who would be, send me an Odeo or send a pigeon.

Now, if you still want to see the video on GETV, here it is.

Jasper Hauser on icon design "AppZapper Inside"

Part of the app design process includes polish. Thankfully many developers on our preferred platform do spend time getting the UI right. I've heard from many on CocoaRadio who want to do all the pieces well, but often don't know where to turn. If this describes you, a stop by #macsb or #cocoadevhouse on IRC could net some pointers.

I'm linking to a blog post by Jasper Hauser, the Dutch designer, where he gives a detailed look "AppZapper Inside". In the earlier CocoaRadio interview with the MacGrab team, Phil Ryu project co-ordinator on Menuet, alluded to Jasper's forthcoming post.

Jasperhauser Iconsketches

With all of the things you got to get right when launching and managing an app or portfolio of apps, you might consider partnering with or hiring others with passion and aptitude in areas such as:
- Creative sales and marketing approaches like MacGrab, a project during Macworld by Brian Ball
- UI design, e.g, Bobby Andersen's icon/UI work on MemoryMiner
- Icon design
- Website concept and design, e.g., AppZapper (a lightweight site that tells enough to sell the app, imo)
- Product naming and branding
- Blogosphere promotion, CocoaRadio could help get your story out

One look at Jasper's work on AppZapper made me realize I have no business cooking up icons for Cocoa apps stewing in my mind ;)

Got comments for me or CocoaRadio guests?

If you've ever wondered why there is no call in comment line for CocoaRadio, it's simply my inability to find a good free solution. Without post-production help, I couldn't really see myself piecing together mp3 comments from email. Nah.

Enter Odeo. Orginally the service was my hope for launching CocoaRadio but then Apple released iTunes 4.9 with podcasting support back in July and set Odeo back a bit, imo. Lately, they have been honing their service with little gems like "send me an Odeo"!

So, send me an Odeo. If you keep it short and sweet, I might just drop your thoughts into a future show.

Send Me A Message

Update: I've also added this feature to the sidebar; replacing "Skype Me" which never got much use anyway. Their closed network is irking me lately. I opt for Jabber, GTalk, Gizmo for audio chat.

CocoaRadio @ Macworld with Jambo Networks

Logo
While there are several ways to network with friends online or via mobile, Jambo Networks offers a twist they promote as "affinityCrjy meets proximity." It does required a WiFi connection to work but that's OK in a targeted market: conferences; where everyone is busy working the backchannel anyway. Jim Young and Charles Ribaudo,  co-founders, have a great story of serendipity in starting Jambo; which means hello in Swahili incidentally. Ain't that cute!

Really though, it's inspirational to see the variety of people producing innovative solutions with WiFi networks, proximity and of course Cocoa.

CocoaRadio @ Macworld with the MacGrab team

During Macworld, MacGrab unleashed a unique marketing effort to launch two new apps, Menuet and AppZapper. You might have been one of hundreds to receive a free license for AppZapper, Menuet or iClip. MacGrab was conjured by Brian Ball along with designer and developer, Phil Ryu and Austin Sarner respectively. Their story will hopefully jolt your perception of software development and promotion.

Update:  The Menuet team includes lead developer Jean Olivier-Lanctôt of the now defunct Cliché Software, project manager and marketer Phillip Ryu of WidgetMachine, and web designer Ollie Wagner; best known for his "Ollie's" freeware apps."

CocoaDevHouse is born out of BarCamp Dallas

What is he talking about?!  I elaborate below...so stay with me for a minute.

In the spirit of all the open, un-conference events going down in San Fran, NYC, Amsterdam, and Dallas, we're adding Cocoa to the mix. While the Powerbook was the choice of most BarCamp participants this past weekend and there were several Cocoa enthusiasts, we didn't have Cocoa specific sessions.

So, as an offshoot of BarCamp,  I suggest doing regular CocoaDevHouse Parties in Dallas and wherever else Cocoa developers live. The "DevHouse" bit lends its heritage to SuperHappyDevHouse in the Bay Area where it's a monthly shindig.

Until further elucidation of our Cocoa-themed DevHouse can be posted, I'll let the mission of SHDH drive our creative planning:

SuperHappyDevHouse has become the Bay Area's premier monthly hackathon event that combines serious and not-so-serious productivity with a fun and exciting party atmosphere. Come to the DevHouse to have fun and get things done!

We're about rapid development, ad-hoc collaboration, and cross pollination. Whether you're a l33t hax0r, hardcore coder, or passionate designer, if you enjoy software and technology development, SuperHappyDevHouse was made for you.

DevHouse is not a marketing event. It's a non-exclusive event intended for passionate and creative technical people that want to have some fun, learn new things, and meet new people. In this way, we're trying to resurrect the spirit of the Homebrew Computer Club. We also draw inspiration from the demoscene as one of the only intentional getting-things-done computer events in the world.

Why do we need another meetup, club, etc?
While there are Cocoa meetups and groups in various cities, they fill a different need and not everyone not lives near San Francisco, Portland, or Seattle. Many developers don't even know any local Cocoa developers and lack the cross-pollination that occurs from in-person meetings. You can take that creativity to another level in the hackathon environment of SuperHappyDevHouse. To remedy this situation and expand the potential for Cocoa developers, we should revitalize local Cocoa community by hosting regular CocoaDevHouse Parties all over.

What's this got to do with you?
With this post, I invite you all to join in the planning of CocoaDevHouse Party and start something local, We're talking in #cocoadevhouse on irc.freenode.net  If IRC is all new to you, just grab a copy of Colloquy, the excellent IRC client for OS X and ask a buddy how to get going.

If you've got ideas, logos, facilities, or time to contribute, jump over to the wiki and get busy. By all means, spread this like Firefox (or BarCamp for that matter). Take the torch to your hometown or nearest larger city. We have the blogosphere at our disposal for promotion, so blog this if you are game.

Apple may just take notice our efforts to spread the wonders of Cocoa like the big conference planners have of BarCamp successes around the world.

If you think this is all hot air and that my brain is just mashed up from BarCamp, just tell me to stick with Cocoa dev interviews.

updated: wiki link and 86'd the "party" bit

CocoaRadio & BarCamp Dallas

BarCamp Dalls T-shirt back

It was a great BarCamp weekend in Dallas. As it turns out, there are several locals (Dallas, Texas) interested in Cocoa and we have planned a BarCamp offshoot, CocoaSuperHappyDevHouse which I will explain in a subsequent post. If you cannot wait, join #cocoadevhouse on irc.freednode.net

Update: So, in the spirit of all the open, un-conferencing events going down in San Fran, NYC, Amsterdam, and Dallas, we're adding Cocoa to the mix. After all, a good 70% of the participants this weekend were toting Powerbooks. I say we start a "Cocoa Local" event in the spirit of SuperHappyDevHouse which has just past event #7 in the Bay Area. CocoaSuperHappyDevHouse is born.

If you've got ideas, logos, facilities, or money to contribute, jump over to the wiki and get busy. Since I'm planted in Dallas, I'll help coordinate Dallas and surrounding areas interest but by all means, spread this like Firefox.

CocoaRadio @ Macworld with Jim Matthews of Fetch

Fetch Logo
Jim Matthews takes a few minutes during Macworld to share his story on Fetch the long-lived Mac FTP client. Jim was a developer at Dartmouth College in the U.S. working on Fetch and a few years ago won big on the TV show, "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." If that sounds like a career plan, you'd be better off reading this or this or this :-) With his newfound wealth, Jim decided to buy Fetch from Dartmouth and founded Fetch Softworks where he continues to build on the application.

For those belly achin' about Universal Binary mods for Intel, Jim had Fetch v.4 running on System 4.1 and PPC native on OS X!  So, who's your daddy?
